July 4th Fun Facts

Commonly known as the Fourth of July and Independence Day, July 4th marks a pivotal moment in American history with nationwide celebrations. It has officially been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, giving citizens a dedicated day to honor the nation’s independence through parades, fireworks, and family gatherings.

However, the tradition of Fourth of July celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution (1775-83). In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies fighting in the revolutionary struggle weighed a resolution to declare their independence from Great Britain.

On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence. Two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson drafted the historic document.

July 4th fireworks and Independence Day celebrations

For those of us living in the US Pacific Northwest, it is one of the few holidays (Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day) that we get during our good weather months when it is typically not raining too much.

On the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day, you will typically find me barbecuing mouthwatering food on the grill and lighting off colorful fireworks displays with family and friends.
