Securing SQL Server: Why do we need to secure SQL Server
Securing SQL Server is important because it helps protect your data and your system from potential security threats. Without proper security measures in place, your SQL Server instance and the data it stores may be vulnerable to attack, which could lead to data breaches, data loss, and other serious consequences.
When we talk about threats there are many types of threats to consider.
1. Internal threats from employees. Even if you trust all employees there are considerations here where people could do damage to the SQL Server without even knowing they were doing something wrong. You always want to hope for the best but plan for the worst. In this case the worst case would be a rogue employee who wants to do damage to your SQL Server.
2. Threats from the outside via social engineering. This is when a bad actor convinces someone on the inside to do something without the team member knowing that they are doing something wrong.
3. Threats from the outside via ransomware. Over the last serveral years I have seen many businesses, even those with good security practices attacked by ransomware. Some have lost all their data, and others were able to recover. In todays world ransomware should always be considered a threat.
4. Threats from hackers besides ransomware. Depending on what you have in your system, there are hackers that may want access to your system in order to leverage, the data, your business, or the leadership in some way.
If even one of these threats attacks you, are you ready?
After your SQL Server has been compromised it is too late to do anything proactive. The time to prepare is now.
