Introduction to SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and the Report Designer.

Audience

This class is intended for people who know how to find the data that they are looking for with queries, and need to format that data into an printable or interactive report.

Time

This class is broken into 2 sessions 2 hours each for a total of 4 hours.  The can be done on the same day with a short break or a lunch in between them, or they can be done on different days.  The class is available both in person, and online.

Course Description

This course will help you get up to speed quickly on using the SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) Report Designer, and the course can be tailored for SQL Server 2005, 2008, 2008R2 or SQL Server 2012.

This is intended as a jump start for people who haven’t used the SSRS Report Designer before or for people who have tried it, but just need some additional instruction.

Class Sessions

Session 1 – 2 Hours

Topic:   Getting started with SSRS 

Overview:  This is a 2 hour class that covers the basics of SSRS reporting.  Everything that you will need to know in order to create your own reports.

  2. Course Logistics – What to expect and what is expected
  3. Overview of SQL Server Reporting Services
  4. SSRS Demonstration
    1. Grid
    2. Grid with Grouping
    3. Marix
    4. Chart
  5. Creating Reports (Using the Wizard)
  6. Steps to build reports in Development Studio
    1. Create a Project
    2. Connect to a datasource (make it shared)
    3. Add the Query
    4. Build the report
    5. Preview the report
    6. Save the project
    7. Deploy the report

Session 2 – 2 Hours

Topic:   Taking that report to the next level.

Overview:  After you have mastered the basics of SSRS, you can enter this class to learn how to make those reports look great.

  1. Advanced Report Creation including Matrix Reporting
    1. Grid
    2. Grid with Grouping
    3. Matrix
    4. Chart
    5. Look and Feel
  2. Using multiple Datasets
  3. Connecting to multiple databases
  4. Advanced Reporting Options (Grouping, Sorting, Formatting, Report Properties)
