What are Connection Points?

With this month being Database Health Monitor month, I have received many questions about licensing, and the common question that has come up is “What are Connection Points?”Sorry for the confusion, I can help clear that up. Connection points are how licensing for Database Health Monitor is tracked.

A connection point allows you to connect to one SQL Server Instance any number of times, with any number of databases on that server.

If you get rid of that SQL Server and replace it with a different server you can connect to that new server using the same connection points, as long as the original server has been disconnected in Database Health Monitor.

  • If you have 5 SQL Servers (Instances) then you would need 5 connection points.
  • If you have 75 SQL Servers (Instances) then you would need 75 connection points (or unlimited).

Think of a connection point like a server license.
