Microsoft has announced that the next version of SQL Server will be SQL Server 2022. This version is currently in the Early Adopters program. Typically after that will come the Community Technical Preview (CTP) Version, which there may be a couple of those. Then it comes to final release or the RTM (Release to Manufacturing) version. Since they have announced that the version will be 2022, that does give them just over 12 months to get it released and still be on time for the “2022” version.
The CTP’s are fun to try out and experiment with, but they do expire and eventually stop working so that is not something you would want to consider for production.
Some of the features being rumored for SQL Server 2022 are the following:
- On-Prem SQL instance Business Continuity using Azure SQL Managed Instance
- Seamless analytics over on-prem operational data
- SQL Server Database Ledger with blockchain functionality
That last item the Database Ledger with blockchain functionality sounds really interesting to me. Will we be able to build smart contracts on SQL Server and publish them to a blockchain? Similar to what is being done with all the big crypto platforms today? That could get interesting.
It appears they will have a couple different types of ledger tables, an append only ledger table, and an updateable ledger table. The difference between the two is that with the updatable one, you can do the normal CRUD operations, but you can get a history of what it looked like at any point in time.
I am looking forward to this.
